Introduction Mixed cropping, i.e. mixing different crops in the same field, provides agronomic advantages as increased productivity under low inputs conditions (e.g. for organic farming: Bedoussac et al. 2015) and higher yield stability (Raseduzzaman and Jensen 2017). In mixed cropping, choosing the right cultivars is critical for the performance of the mixture, as shown for pea-barley mixtures (Hauggaard-Nielsen and Jensen 2001) and maize-bean mixtures (Hoppe 2016). Development of locally-adapted faba bean cultivars for organic conditions in Germany through a participatory breeding approach Organic Eprints

Organic farming requires cultivars that are specifically adapted to this low input cropping system. Hence, organic farmers and scientists joined in a participatory breeding approach to develop region-specific genotypes of spring faba bean for organic conditions in Germany. A set of 49 genotypes with contrasting degrees of heterozygosity and heterogeneity was used in field trials across five locations in Germany during 3 years 2004, 2005 and 2006. The oil of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a valuable oil for human nutrition. It contains a high amount of unsaturated fatty acids, in particular linoleic acid (up to 90 %). There is a great demand for ecologically produced oil in Germany, though oil crops are cultivated on 2 % of the ecological acreage. In Germany, hardly any variety test exists, moreover there has been no breeding efforts so far, although genetic variation in safflower is large. The aim of this study was the development of a rapid and non-destructive method to determine oil content in safflower seed using NIRS (Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy). Die Anfälligkeit gegenüber der Streifenkrankheit (Pyrenophora graminea) im deutschen Sommergerstensortiment unter natürlichen Befallsbedingungen im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints

Aus der Beschreibenden Sortenliste 2003 wurden 45 Sommergersten neben fünf Mustern mit ausgewiesenen Resistenzen und jeweils fünf Sorten aus Dänemark und Österreich über zwei Testzyklen zwischen Parzellen mit infiziertem Saatgut einem natürlichen Befall mit der Streifenkrankheit ausgesetzt. Die Sorten Peggy und Baccara zeigten mit unter 0,1% Befall neben den Resistenzträgern Vada, Betzes, Ricardo und Trysil die ausgeprägteste Widerstandsfähigkeit. Weitere zehn Sorten blieben im Durchschnitt unter 1% Befall. Mit über 5% Befall erreichten 13 Sorten ein ertragsgefährdendes Anfälligkeitsniveau. Die Anfälligkeit gegenüber der Streifenkrankheit (Pyrenophora graminea) im deutschen Sommergerstensortiment unter natürlichen Befallsbedingungen im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Ziel des Forschungsvorhabens ist es, die im Handel erhältliche Sommergerste-Sorten auf ihrer Anfälligkeit gegenüber der saatgutübertragbaren Streifenkrankheit zu untersuchen. 55 Sommergerstensorten und fünf genetische Ressourcen mit Streifenkrankheitsresistenzen werden bei Darzau/Ost-Niedersachsen über zwei Jahre und auf dem Dottenfelderhof/Wetterau ein Jahr lang einem natürlichen Befall ausgesetzt. Die Sonnenblume - eine Eiweißpflanze für den Ökologischen Landbau? Organic Eprints

Die Sonnenblume ist die wichtigste ölliefernde Pflanze im Öko-Landbau. Da ihre Samen neben einem hohen Fettgehalt auch einen beachtlichen Anteil an Eiweiß enthalten, sollten in diesem Projekt grundlegende Fragen beantwortet werden, damit die praktische Pflanzenzüchtung Strategien entwickeln kann, um Sonnenblumen mit einem erhöhten Proteinertrag züchten zu können. Aus 235 untersuchten Sonnenblumenlinien wurden 23 Linien mit unterschiedlichen Proteingehalten gewählt, die als Kreuzungseltern von 105 Testhybriden dienten. Diversity of carbon isotope discrimination in genetic resources of wheat Organic Eprints

Strong drought tolerance is an important objective in breeding new wheat varieties. We compared the drought tolerance of land races and modern varieties of various spring wheat forms. 13C discrimination (CID) indicated how significantly the tested wheat varieties were inclined to drought tolerance. CID is a trait related to stomatal closure and consequently an important component of the tolerance to drought. Samples were grown in České Budĕjovice (CZ), from 2009 to 2012. Effect of cultivar and soil characteristics on nutritional value in organic and conventional wheat Organic Eprints

Evidence of greater nutritional value in organic crops is currently a subject of intense debate. Our objectives in this study were to test for grain mineral concentration in 35 winter wheat cultivars in paired organic and conventional systems, and to determine the influence of cultivar, soil characteristics and farming system on mineral concentration. Here we report preliminary results that show that the grain mineral concentration in organic wheat was higher for copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) and lower in calcium (Ca), than the grain mineral concentration in conventional wheat. As a legume crop, soya needs specific rhizobia bacteria to be supplied by biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Eignung von Bradyrhizobien-Impfpräparaten zur Inokulation von Sojabohnen Organic Eprints

Wie jede andere Leguminose, kann auch die Sojabohne (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) mit Hilfe von Soja-spezifischen Knöllchenbakterien (Bradyrhizobium japonicum) Luft-Stickstoff binden. Da die Bradyrhizobien natürlicherweise nicht in den mitteleuropäischen Böden vorkommen, müssen die Samen der Sojabohne mit kommerziell verfügbaren Bradyrhizobien-Impfpräparaten inokuliert werden. Beim Anbau hat sich in den letzten Jahren jedoch gezeigt, dass die Inokulation vor allem in kühleren Klimaten bei einzelnen Präparaten zu unzuverlässiger Knöllchenbildung und damit ungenügender Stickstoffbindung führen kann. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Eignung kommerziell verfügbarer Bradyrhizobien-Impfpräparate zur Inokulation der Sojabohne zu prüfen.

Einkorn mit optimierten Qualitätsmerkmalen für Back- und Teigwaren aus ökologischem Anbau Organic Eprints
Aufgrund seines potentiell hohen Carotingehaltes ist Einkorn von Natur aus bereits als funktionelles Lebensmittel anzusehen (functional food). Die Eignung von Einkorn zur Herstellung von Teig- und Backwaren ist jedoch sortenabhängig und zeigt unterschiedliche Ausprägungen. Derzeit verfügbare Sorten sind in den Klebereigenschaften sehr weich. Doch bereits BORGHI et al. (1996) fanden Muster mit außerordentlich hohen Sedimentationswerten, was auf einen festeren Kleber schließen lässt.
